Seven businesses were destroyed when Rapid City's historic Sweeney Building burned to the ground today in 1997. Built in 1886, the structure was named for entrepreneur Thomas Sweeney, who ran a hardware store there and dreamed that Rapid City could become a metropolis like Denver.
