Lakota spiritual leader Sitting Bull was killed today in 1890 after gunfire erupted when Standing Rock Agency police arrested him. His murder escalated tensions that exploded 15 days later at the Wounded Knee Massacre. Sitting Bull was buried at the military cemetery in Fort Yates, N.D., but in 1953 his remains were moved to a grave near Mobridge.
