On January 22, 1943, Spearfish residents experienced the most dramatic temperature swing in recorded history — a rise of 49 degrees (from -4 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit) in under two minutes.
To mark this momentous anniversary, Spearfish is hosting Chinook Days, a winter festival with mountain sports, craft beer, food, music, arts and more.

Producers from around the region have selected their top-notch livestock to bring to this show and want YOU to come and see them!
These producers raise a variety of livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. Each day is a different species so you will get a new experience no matter which day you visit! The day of the show, producers clean and prep their livestock to look their best for the judge of their respective species. They are divided into classes by weight, age or breed and judged on their structural soundness, ability to move, and their overall appearance. The top individuals in each class get put into a final class where they are judged against each other to see who is the top overall in each species.
Come out and pick your favorite species of livestock and root for those in each class that you think should have the chance of winning the top overall honors!

Our Little STEAMers Preschool is based on the Montessori principles that children learn best when they are given the freedom to move, to choose their own work, and follow their interests, operating within boundaries that include respect for themselves, others, and their environment. In Little STEAMers Preschool students learn through guided exploration and build skills with independent hands-on learning. Using Montessori methods, our teachers progress students’ exploration skills and use a complete preschool curriculum to develop students’ understanding of STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and communication (language arts & literacy).
Fee: $1,064.25 per semester for South Dakota Discovery Center Members
